The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Sunday identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks as the “individual “subject involved” in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, according to an official statement. The gunman, who was fatally shot by Secret Service personnel, fired multiple rounds from an elevated position outside the Pennsylvania rally venue. The roof was less than 150 meters away from Trump’s location, a distance achievable for accurate marksmanship with a weapon. For perspective, 150 meters is the distance at which US Army recruits must hit a human-sized target with the M16 rifle during basic training. The AR-15, similar to the shooter’s weapon, is a semi-automatic civilian variant of the military M16.
Agency Response and Oversight
During a late-night news conference, FBI and Pennsylvania State Police officials briefed reporters on the ongoing investigation. FBI Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek expressed surprise at the gunman’s ability to open fire before being neutralized.
Specialized Security Teams
Sources reveal that the Secret Service deployed its counter sniper team and counter assault team, codenamed “Hercules” and “Hawkeye” respectively, at the rally. These heavily armed units are tasked with eliminating threats to ensure the safety of protected individuals.
Government Response and Priorities
US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the department’s commitment to collaborating with law enforcement in investigating the shooting. Protecting presidential candidates and securing campaign events remains a top priority for the department.
