A tragic incident at an Indian restaurant in Gudauri, Georgia, has claimed the lives of at least 12 people. According to authorities, the victims showed no signs of violence and the case is being treated as negligent loss of life under Article 116 of Georgia’s Criminal Code.
The deceased, believed to be restaurant employees, were discovered in a sleeping area on the second floor. The Ministry of Internal Affairs suspects the incident may be linked to a generator used in a closed indoor space following a power outage the previous evening. Of the 12 victims, 11 were foreign nationals—many reportedly from Punjab, India—while one was a Georgian citizen, according to the sources.
“Individuals who have died in the incident in Georgia are mostly from the state of Punjab. Embassy is in touch with the families and is working with local authorities to repatriate the mortal remains at the earliest,” the source told Financial Express.
The Indian embassy is coordinating with local authorities to expedite the repatriation of the mortal remains and has reached out to the victims’ families.
A police investigation is underway, with forensic experts conducting examinations and interviews to determine the exact cause of death. The Mtskheta-Mtianeti Ministry of Internal Affairs has assured a thorough probe into the circumstances leading to the tragedy, though the identities of the victims have not yet been made public.
