Eight years of romance, countless glamorous appearances, and a life together that’s been played out on the world stage, Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez finally made it official on Monday.

The Portuguese football superstar proposed to the Argentine model, and the announcement came in true modern fairytale fashion, with an Instagram post that broke the internet.

In the photo, Rodríguez shows off a jaw-dropping oval-cut diamond that seems almost too big to be real. Her caption, written in Spanish, reads, “Yes, I do. In this and in all my lives.”

The message is romantic, the sentiment timeless and the ring? Well, that is the part the world cannot stop talking about.

How much does the engagement ring cost?

According to Forbes, experts say Ronaldo may have presented her with a diamond of legendary proportions. The stone could be around 50 carats, potentially larger than the iconic sparklers worn by Mariah Carey, Kim Kardashian, and Lauren Sánchez.

Kristian Spofforth of Heritage Auctions told Forbes, “oval-cut, D color, and VVS1 clarity, the kind of grading that puts it in the realm of near-perfect diamonds.”

The ring’s setting, he says, is “elegant, minimal, and perfectly tailored to showcase the stone’s natural beauty,” allowing the diamond to do all the talking.

Gemologist Deborah Villepigue estimates the centre stone could actually be closer to 55 or even 60 carats, with a value around $3 million, as told to Forbes.

Who are the other celebrities popular for their engagement rings?

Rapper Gucci Mane made headlines in 2019 when he surprised his wife, Keyshia Ka’oir, with a jaw-dropping 60-carat oval-cut diamond.

The gift was an upgrade from the 25-carat ring he had originally proposed with just two years earlier, proof that even in marriage, the sparkle can grow.

Long before Instagram, Hollywood’s most famous love affair produced one of the most legendary diamonds of all time. In 1969, Richard Burton gifted Elizabeth Taylor a 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond, a stone so extraordinary it was simply known as “The Taylor-Burton Diamond.”

Burton reportedly purchased it from Cartier for $1 million, a figure that would equal roughly $8.6 million today.

The gem eclipsed the Harry Winston ring Burton had first proposed with the year before: a 33.19-carat Asscher-cut diamond that he famously outbid Winston himself to win at auction for $305,000, then the highest price ever paid for a diamond ring.

Rodríguez’s sparkler also surpasses some of the most talked-about celebrity rings of recent memory. Mariah Carey’s 35-carat emerald-cut diamond from billionaire James Packer designed by Wilfredo Rosado and valued at $10 million was once the gold standard of contemporary celebrity engagement rings.

Kim Kardashian’s $8 million, 15-carat cushion-cut diamond from Kanye West, designed by Lorraine Schwartz, remains iconic in its own right.

Then there’s Lauren Sánchez, whose engagement to Jeff Bezos came with a 30-carat pink diamond valued at $5 million, also by Schwartz.

Sánchez, ever the style statement-maker, was later seen wearing a second ring, an oval diamond estimated between 30 and 40 carats and worth about $4 million, at her opulent Venice wedding earlier this summer.
