Layoffs: A young sales professional recently shared a shocking experience of being laid off by his company on the very day he got married. The incident, which has drawn attention on Reddit, highlights the emotional and financial strain faced by employees during abrupt corporate layoffs.
Layoff Call Comes on Big Day
The employee, who had been working at the company for just four months, recounted the events leading up to the layoff. “I get a text from my boss early in the morning as I’m getting ready for work. My boss says ‘You can work from home today’. It was a little odd, so I texted him back and said ‘Oh ok, everything good?’ A few minutes later he gets back to me and says ‘No, can I call you real quick?’”
During the call, he was informed that he was being laid off due to a restructuring at the company. “He calls me and says I’m getting laid off due to a restructuring at the company. He said the company tried to lay me off Friday, but I had taken that day off for my wedding and he was nice enough to lie to them for me and say he couldn’t get ahold of me as to not ruin my wedding day.”
Severance and Reposting Add to Frustration
To make matters worse, the job was reposted on LinkedIn only hours later with a lower salary. “And to top it all off, a few hours later I find that my job has been reposted on LinkedIn at a lower salary. The severance package is not even one full paycheck, and they’re asking for their equipment back after all the money I made for them. They will let me keep my health coverage through the end of the year at the convenient price of only $600 a month.”
The employee expressed his frustration, noting that the timing and circumstances of the layoff felt particularly insensitive. “I’m just using this to vent…I’m angry and it is not ok for companies to do this to us. I am this close to naming the company and its CEO on social media, but I need another job and don’t want to ruin any opportunities.”
