Yashasvi Jaiswal added a new chapter to Indian cricket history on Friday by becoming the first Indian cricketer to score a century in his debut Test in both Australia and England. The 23-year-old opener achieved the rare feat on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley in Leeds, marking yet another milestone in his short but impactful Test career.
Opening the innings for India in the first match of the five-Test series, Jaiswal reached his hundred with a single off Brydon Carse on the last ball of the 49th over. His 100 came off 150 balls and included 16 fours and one six. This knock came just months after he had scored 161 on debut in Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth in November 2024.
Before Jaiswal, three Indian batters — Motganhalli Jaisimha, Sunil Gavaskar and Jaiswal himself — had centuries in their first Test in Australia, and six others — Vijay Manjrekar, Abbas Ali Baig, Sandeep Patil, Sourav Ganguly, Murali Vijay and now Jaiswal — had done so in their England debut. But none had done it in both countries until now.
The stylish southpaw also became the seventh Indian batter to score a century at the iconic Headingley ground, joining an elite list that includes legends such as Vijay Manjrekar, MAK Pataudi, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sourav Ganguly.
Jaiswal’s 117-run partnership with skipper Shubman Gill (57*) helped India recover from two quick wickets and steady the innings. His innings was marked by calm footwork, confident strokeplay, and smart shot selection.
Since making his debut in July 2023 against West Indies, Jaiswal has emerged as one of India’s most promising Test talents—and with performances like this, he’s only just getting started.
