In a bold tactical move during tonight’s high-stakes clash at Chepauk, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have opted for a “pinch-hitting” strategy, promoting Sunil Narine to open the innings alongside Finn Allen.

This means KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, who has opened in every match this season, has dropped himself down the order likely to the No. 3 spot, to provide stability in the middle overs.

The Strategy behind the Move

The “Pinch-Hitter” Factor: Chasing a formidable target of 193, KKR is looking to exploit the Powerplay overs. Sunil Narine’s ability to clear the infield with unconventional shots is a proven strategy to get the run rate soaring early, even if he falls cheaply.

Earlier, Rahane had defended himself when he was asked a question about his strike rate in the powerplay overs.

“People who are talking… probably have certain agendas,” Rahane stated. “The amount of success I have had, I guess they are jealous of me.”
