India made T20 history by defeating South Africa by seven runs in a nerve-wracking final at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados on Saturday. Opting to bat on a dry surface, the 2007 champions overcame a top-order collapse to post a competitive 176-7.
Virat Kohli (76) scored his first fifty of the tournament, while Axar Patel contributed a crucial 47. Anrich Nortje and Keshav Maharaj took two wickets each for South Africa.
In response, South Africa faced their own top-order collapse. Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs (31) revived their chase, and Heinrich Klaasen (52) launched a spectacular counter-attack. However, India’s precise death-overs bowling restricted South Africa to 169-8.
Arshdeep Singh’s economical 19th over, conceding just 4 runs, and Hardik Pandya’s excellent final over, taking two wickets, sealed the victory for India. An emotional Pandya recalled IPL trolling, while Virat Kohli announced his retirement from T20I cricket, saying it was time for the next generation.
