Under the maverick captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India on Saturday won their second T20 World Cup title. This was the first ICC title for the Men in Blue in last 10 years. The terrific leadership by Sharma has cemented his place in cricket history. In this stunning triumph in Barbados, Rohit Sharma made three world records.

The Indian skipper has now become the first-ever captain to lead a team in 50 T20I victories, with the 50th win being the World Cup final against South Africa. Behind Rohit is Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who has 48 wins from 85 games, while Rohit has achieved 50 wins from just 62 matches, including a super over win against Afghanistan.

Among Indian captains, MS Dhoni is the second most successful in this format with 41 wins from 72 matches, followed by Virat Kohli with 30 wins from 50 matches. Rohit assumed the T20I captaincy after India’s disappointing performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

In his first T20 World Cup as captain, Rohit led the team to the semifinal in Australia, where they were defeated by England. In this year’s World Cup, however, India avenged that loss by beating England by 68 runs in the semifinal.

Under Rohit’s leadership, India has also become the first team to win the T20 World Cup without losing a single game, ending an 11-year drought of ICC trophies. The last time India won an ICC tournament was the 2013 Champions Trophy in England under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

The third record for Sharma is that he is the first Indian player to win the T20 championship twice. Last time, he had won the title clash under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. The 2007 India captain took to Instagram to congratulate the team on their special win. He said that it was a “priceless birthday gift.” Dhoni will turn 43 on July 7 next month. It was his first Instagram post in last one year.
