In a historic ODI World Cup match against Sri Lanka, Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan orchestrated a remarkable record-breaking chase. Rizwan’s heroic performance came after Pakistan found themselves at 37 for the loss of two wickets when he stepped up to the crease. Teaming up with Abdullah Shafique, Rizwan constructed an astonishing 176-run partnership for the third wicket. Rizwan later said that his innings was a tribute to the victims of the Israel-Palestine conflict in Gaza.

“This was for our brothers and sisters in Gaza. Happy to contribute in the win. Credits to the whole team and especially Abdullah Shafique and Hassan Ali for making it easier. Extremely grateful to the people of Hyderabad for the amazing hospitality and support throughout,” Rizwan posted on X.

Social media users were divided on the Pakistani cricketer’s tweet with some advising him to “focus on the game”, others appreciating his support and urging more players to speak up on the issue.

Chasing a formidable target of 345, Rizwan displayed immense skill and resilience, amassing 131 runs from 121 deliveries. His innings featured three majestic sixes and eight well-timed boundaries. With ten deliveries to spare and six wickets remaining, he sealed a memorable victory for Pakistan.

Reflecting on his extraordinary performance, the modest Rizwan expressed, “Performing for your country is always a source of immense pride. I’m left almost speechless by this moment. It was a challenging match, but our team’s confidence remained unshaken after the bowling innings.”

Following this victory, Pakistan stands at second place in the tournament standings with two wins from as many matches, just behind New Zealand. Their upcoming clash in the league stage will see them facing arch-rivals India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14.
