Liverpool has appointed Gary McAllister as first-team coach.
Manager Brendan Rodgers says on the team website Saturday that ”Gary has a special connection with this club and its supporters…When I met him I was struck by his passion, enthusiasm and knowledge for what we’re looking to achieve here.”
The 50-year-old McAllister, a former Coventry and Leeds manager, returns to the club where he spent two successful years as a player between 2000-02, winning the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup.
The former Scotland midfielder becomes the latest addition to Rodgers’ new-look backroom staff.
Rodgers earlier this month named Sean O’Driscoll as his new assistant manager and elevated Pepijn Lijnders to the role of first-team development coach.
Liverpool finished sixth in the Premier League last season.
