Virat Kohli showcased his champion’s resolve, guiding India to a triumphant six-wicket victory against Australia in their World Cup opener with a brilliant 85 runs. Kohli, backed by KL Rahul’s composed 97 not out, formed a match-winning partnership of 165 runs that made the challenging 200-run target appear easily achievable, though it took 41.2 overs.
Despite a rocky start with three top-order batsmen dismissed for ducks, Kohli’s audacity was on full display. He played a crucial drive off Josh Hazlewood, signifying India’s fightback. Kohli’s fortune favoured him when a misjudged catch by Mitchell Marsh allowed him to continue his innings. He exhibited remarkable fitness, earning 61 of his runs through singles and twos in his 116-ball innings.
Rahul, playing a commendable role, nullified Adam Zampa’s spin with well-executed strokes. His partnership with Kohli emphasised his readiness for any battle. Rahul’s eight fours and two sixes, including the winning shot, were integral to India’s success.
India’s spinners also played a pivotal role, with Ravindra Jadeja (3/28 in 10 overs) leading the way. His experience at Chennai’s Chepauk track, thanks to his tenure with the Chennai Super Kings, proved crucial. Jadeja’s subtle variations and knowledge of the pitch flummoxed the Australian batsmen. He dismissed Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, further enhancing his reputation as Smith’s nemesis.
Jadeja’s clever strategy exploited Smith’s hesitation to play deliveries that might trap him leg-before. Smith left a slower, sharply turning delivery, allowing it to dislodge the bails, signaling the end of Australia’s hopes for a substantial score.
Alongside Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin (2/34 in 10 overs) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/42 in 10 overs) contributed to Australia’s downfall, bowling them out for 199 runs in 49.3 overs.
While Kohli and Rahul stole the spotlight with their exceptional performances, the spinners’ collective effort helped India secure two valuable points in their opening World Cup encounter.
