Better than Kohli? Vaibhav Suryavanshi, 14, smashes Virat’s decade-old record in U19 World Cup blitz

In a smashing performance during the India vs Bangladesh U-19 clash, Vaibhav Suryavanshi emerged as a rising star. The young Indian batter surpassed Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs for India in Youth ODIs with his stellar performance. Suryanvanshi entered the match as an opener and hit 72 runs against Bangladesh, just less than a century on Saturday.

While Virat Kohli amassed 978 runs across 24 U-19 ODI innings between 2006 and 2008, Suryavanshi conquered this milestone in only his 20th match. Having entered the game with 975 runs from 19 innings, his latest knock took his career tally to 1,047 runs in 20 innings, setting a new benchmark for Indian youth cricket.

Suryavanshi’s 2025 IPL performance

Suryavanshi claimed his fame in the world of cricket with the breakthrough IPL performance, where he smashed a century for the Rajasthan Royals by scoring  101 runs off 38 balls against the Gujarat Titans in the last IPL season. He has successfully carried that momentum into the Youth ODI circuit, establishing his reputation as a high-impact opener. Over 20 matches, he has maintained a dominant average of 52+ and a blistering strike rate of 157.68, underpinned by three centuries and five half-centuries.

Who is Vaibhav Suryavanshi?

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, hailing from Bihar, made his Ranji Trophy debut at the tender age of 12, which made his name in the record books in 2024. He continued his stellar performance on the international youth stage, where he hammered a 58-ball century against Australia U-19, the fastest ever by an Indian in Youth Tests. This explosive potential triggered a bidding war in the IPL 2025 auction, resulting in a historic Rs 1.1 crore contract with the Rajasthan Royals, making him the youngest player ever signed by a franchise.
