Finance minister Arun Jaitley said on Wednesday that indirect tax receipts grew 37.3% annually in May this year, mainly on account of extra levies imposed this year.

The withdrawal of the duty benefits that the automobile sector had enjoyed last year also enhanced indirect tax collections in May. Cumulatively, in the April-May period, indirect tax receipts grew 39.2%, the minister said. The Centre had raised the clean energy cess from R100 to R200 per of coal this year to finance clean energy initiatives.
