Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Dr Ambedkar International Centre For Socio-Economic Transformation (DAICSET) at 15 Janpath in Delhi today and said it would be an important place for research on social and economic issues. Along with the Dr Ambedkar International Centre, prime minister Narendra Modi also unveiled two statues of the Dalit icon at the centre in Janpath. At the same event, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot, Minister of State Ramdas Athawale and Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Vijay Goel were also present. Spread over a 3.25-acre plot in Janpath, Dr. Ambedkar International Centre is Rs 195-crore project. PM Modi is also expected to announce the setting up of ‘Dr Ambedkar International Centre for Socio-Economic Transformation’ within the complex, meant to serve as a ‘centre of excellence’ for research in the fields of humanities and social sciences. The centre will act as a government think-tank engaged in preparing policy briefs and undertaking projects, research and field work, with an emphasis on Ambedkar and Buddhist studies. The structure also hosts two giant bronze statues of Ambedkar, one stone statue of Dhyani-Buddha, and an Ashok stupa, which, at almost 70 feet, is said to be the country’s tallest. The two statues of Ambedkar have been designed by sculptors Ram Sutar and Anil Sutar, who have also been given the contracts for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s statue in Gujarat and the mid-sea Shivaji statue in Mumbai.(Twitter/@narendramodi)
