Facebook’s new logo isn’t new, only tweaked a bit

Facebook has got a new logo, but it’s not completely new – just a minor tweaking with the original, so much so that you would have to look closely to spot the differences. The new blue wordmark keeps the favicon (that’s the “f” icon you see most often), changes up the “a” and features a rounder, slimmer custom typeface that’s easier to read on small screens, Wired.com reported. The point of the update was to “modernise” the logo and make it feel more friendly and approachable”, creative director Josh Higgins was reported as saying by logo blog Brand New. This latest logo refresh could easily be seen as the next step in Facebook’s efforts to prune its visual identity. “The brief for this was that it be a little more friendly and more approachable,” Eric Olson, who created Klavika and the custom typeface featured in the new mark was quoted as saying. As the creator of the original typeface, he says designing for accessibility was a matter of paring down the letters. “The thing that I really wanted to bring over to the new one was a single story ‘a’. I felt like there was a point of entry there to streamline a bit,” he added. That change to one letter makes the entire logo friendlier by conveying a sense of conviviality. In other words, the logo is simpler. (Reuters)

Snapchat rolls out update for iOS, Android devices

Snapchat has rolled out an update for iOS and Android devices. According to the Techcrunch.com, Snapchat has removed tap- and -hold feature, which required holding a finger down to view snaps and stories. From now, the users just have to tap to view. Snaps have always been viewed by placing a finger on the screen and holding it there; lifting it up would immediately stop the playback. If the users want to stop watching a story, they can drag their finger down anywhere on the screen and it will close. Snapchat allows the people to add friends using Snapcodes. These personalized QR codes with black dots surrounding the Snapchat Ghostface Chilla logo could be scanned by someone else’s Snapchat camera and they would instantly follow the concerned person. Also, now Snapchat has made adding friends easier in four ways. Firstly, the users can add friend by adding a selfie to their Snapcode. The users will have to swipe down from the camera to see their Snapcode. Tap on it and they can shoot a series of five selfies to put their face or some other picture inside the Snapchat logo, personalizing their Snapcode. Secondly, by saving the Snapcode. After tapping their Snapcode, a button in the top right corner lets the users save it to their camera roll or share it elsewhere. Thirdly, the users can scan the screenshots of Snapcode. Users can screenshot someone else’s Snapcode and then go to the Snapcode menu, select Add Friends and then pick one out of their camera roll. Fourthly, users can open Add Friends, and then Add Nearby, and Snapchat will use his or her location to figure out whether the other users in their proximity also have Add Nearby open. The users will appear in each other’s Nearby lists for quick following.

According to thenextweb.com, the users need to be an Office 365 enterprise subscriber to test it. The users can now register for access to Skype Meeting Broadcast, which is a largely device-agnostic video conferencing tool for meetings with up to 10,000 participants. The preview features include the ability to take feedback from attendees via Yammer integration and Bing Pulse sentiment tracking. Also, enterprise users can now register for PSTN Conferencing, which lets the people dial into a Skype for Business meeting in Office 365 from a landline or mobile. This is currently open in the US only. End-users cannot actually sign up for the trials though, so they will need to register if they are interested.

Google integrates Maps into Drive

Google has integrated custom Google Maps into Google Drive. Google’s My Maps tool already allows its users to create custom maps. According to thenextweb.com, this will make the service more discoverable and will also allow the Drive to create, share and manage Google’s custom My Maps. Also, the users can import data from their Drive documents, such as addresses from a spreadsheet or form to pinpoint them on the map. This change should make it a little easier to manage all custom mapping of the users, as these will now be accessible from the same place where they find their documents and spreadsheets. In addition, it makes it easier to share custom maps with others, as the user can simply drop the map into a shared Drive folder.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg on Twitter query: Control your company to keep your job

Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that he thinks one doesn’t have to be a founder to be a successful CEO, but that status can give a lot of advantages that people might otherwise miss out on. The 31-year-old Internet entrepreneur Mark Zuckerber shared his perspective in response to a question from tech pundit Om Malik, who posed a question to Zuckerberg on how founder-CEOs are judged differently from non-founder CEOs, Re/code reported. Malik wanted to know if this double standard is what created Wall Street’s angst with Twitter, where non-founder Dick Costolo stepped down after months of criticism and pressure from investors. “I can answer that,” wrote Mark Zuckerber, along with a smiley face emoticon, adding that he doesn’t think there’s anything that makes founders intrinsically better at running companies than non-founder CEOs. There are plenty of good leaders who are both. He added “if you have control of the company, like I do at Facebook and an increasing number of founders do, then it is very difficult for investors to fire you,” which means one doesn’t need to worry about losing job over a couple of bad quarters or controversial short term decisions and that makes it easier for him to make the “correct” decisions.
