Indian Railways: It is also targeting a 15% reduction in total working expenses (TWE) next fiscal from the business-as-usual scenario, principally by attempts to optimise staff and fuel costs but without cutting essential transfers to depreciation and pension funds. Rail budget 2016: Facing resource crunch, Indian Railways is said to be mulling the possibility of effecting a 5 to 10 per cent increase in the passenger fares in the coming budget. The proposal is being considered against the backdrop of a decline in both passenger and freight earnings and the additional burden of Rs 32,000 cr towards implementing the 7th pay commission recommendations, Railway Ministry sources said.

4. Indian Railways fares: As far as rounding-off of fares is concerned, fares of all classes except Second Class Ordinary (Suburban). Chargeable Fares, as obtained after adding Miscellaneous Charges like Reservation Fee, Supplementary charge for Superfast trains, Catering Charge, Service Tax etc. to the Basic Fare, will be rounded off to the next higher multiple of Rs. 5. Second Class (Suburban) Fares Chargeable Fares for Second Class Suburban passengers, as obtained after adding applicable miscellaneous charges like MUTP Surcharge (as and where applicable) etc. to the Basic Fare, is proposed to be rounded off to the next higher multiple of fi ve rupees, except that in cases where either '1' or '6' comes up as the last digit (i.e. in unit's place) it was be rounded off to the immediately lower multiple of rupees 5, i.e. 11.00, 21.00, 31.00, etc. would respectively become rupees 10.00, 20.00, 30.00, etc. and 6.00, 16.00, 26.00 etc. would respectively become rupees 5.00, 15.00, 25.00 etc. And, Fare values ending in rupees 2, 3 or 4 would be getting rounded off to rupees 5 and those ending in rupees 7, 8 or 9 to rupees 10 and so on and so forth.

Rail budget 2016: On top of the 7th Pay Commission burden this, the gross budgetary support for the 2015-16 has also been slashed by Rs 8,000 cr by the Finance Ministry due to low spending by the Indian Railways. The sources said there are several possibilities including a fare hike are being looked into nothing has been finalised yet.

Indian Railways: Travelling AC 1st class on trains on concessional tickets may become a thing of past, with the public transporter starting a review of the facility extended to various people, including senior citizens, patients and sportspersons. It is also considering asking the ministries with which the travellers are associated to bear the cost of such travel.
