As the deadline for filing the Income Tax returns (ITR) for FY- 2024-25 nears, citizens are rushing to login onto the portal. Many users on Saturday, however, reported trouble in logging in and filing ITR, stating there are multiple technical glitches. Some reported trouble in downloading the form 26AS while others stated that the website was taking too long to respond on any command.

The deadline to file the ITR is September 15 and hence, a large number of people are operating the website to file the ITR. According to the Income Tax department, over six crore returns have been filed for Assessment Year 2025-26. Still, some users are urging the department to extend the deadline.

Income tax department responds

The troubles that users are encountering are being reported since Saturday morning. Many tax professionals and individual taxpayers are posting on social media about technical glitches, issues with receiving OTPs, and accessing the TRACES portal.

In response, the Income Tax Department has said that everything is “working fine” and its checks show that the e-filing portal is also working fine. “You may please try again after clearing your browser cache or by using an alternate browser,” it said on X.

ITR filing dates

The IT department has said that ITR deadline was July 31, 2025 initially. However, it later extended the same to 15th September in May. At that time, the government had given extra time to the taxpayers in view of the delay in the updated ITR forms and utilities, as well as for operational preparedness. Now that the extended deadline is near again, taxpayers are hoping for an extension again, as millions of ITR filers are still waiting to file returns.

However, the government has not said anything clearly whether the income tax return filing last date will be extended beyond 15th September or not.
