In a slight relief for ITR filers grappling with multiple issues related to tax portal and e-payments, the government last night extended the deadline for filing returns by 24 hours.
On the last date of income tax return filing 2025, lakhs of taxpayers are still trying to file their returns on the e-filing portal. But complaints of income tax e-filing portal glitches are constantly coming up. Many users say that the portal is repeatedly slowing down, the page is not loading or showing errors at the time of submission.
However, the department claims that the portal is working perfectly. It says that if anyone is facing problems, then the reason for this can also be local system or browser settings. For this, the department has advised taxpayers to adopt some steps, such as deleting temporary files, clearing browser cache and cookies, logging in incognito mode, trying a different browser, disabling browser extensions or changing the network.
Taxpayers’ complaints trend on social media
Hundreds of taxpayers expressed their displeasure on social media platform ‘X’ ( formerly Twitter).
A user wrote, “Technical glitch in Income Tax site. Tried filing return since yesterday but website not moving. Tried whole night also. It’s a pathetic situation for taxpayers of this country.” Many people also complained about calling the helpline number and said that the phone is not responding.
Another user wrote, “The income tax portal is not working today also- today’s condition is worst then yestereday. After clicking on Login, error- This page is not working!!”
In its reply to the user, the Income Tax Department wrote,” May we request you to share your details (along with PAN & your mobile no.) with us via email at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in Our team will get in touch with you.”
7.3 crore ITRs have already been filed
According to the Income Tax Department, more than 7.3 crore ITR filing 2025 has already been completed this year, which is more than last year. 7.28 crore returns were filed in AY 2024-25 and 6.77 crore returns were filed in AY 2023-24. It is clear from this that the number of taxpayers is increasing continuously.
Why is timely ITR filing necessary?
If you do not file Income Tax Return on time, then you may have to pay late fees and penalty. Also, late filing of ITR may also delay the refund. This is why the department has repeatedly advised taxpayers not to wait till the last moment and complete their ITR e-filing 2025 as soon as possible.
