Japanese multinational corporation Sharp has introduced a new type of screen that it has begun manufacturing.

According to Techcrunch.com, the company’s ‘in-cell type touch displays,’ which they said combine the LCD and touch sensor that are generally fitted separately on mobile devices. Sharp said that by putting them both together frees up space for phone makers to add additional things.

The company was quoted, as saying that the in-cell type touch display has the touch sensor function built into the LCD, thus enabling thinner and lighter displays. This also gives more design freedom to smart-phone manufacturers.

Initially, these displays are for mobile phones. Sharp has planned to develop them for tablets and PCs in the near future.

Sharp has developed the display for Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ and manufactures components for a range of other tech companies.

In-cell type touch displays in devices could help pack in longer lasting battery or make smart-phones thinner and lighter.
