Samsung on Thursday announced a new budget smartphone, Galaxy J3, priced at R8,990, which will be available online through Snapdeal.

The phone has a special S-Bike feature to ensure safety of those using mobiles while on a motorcycle. It is Samsung’s first phone with such a feature.

“We’ve noticed that a lot of our budget smartphone users are the ones who are also most likely to be using a bike. And very often when they are on a bike, they can’t tell whether the call they are getting is urgent. The S-bike mode is aimed at solving this problem,” said Asim Warsi, senior vice-president, Samsung Electronics.

Galaxy J3 comes with an NFC tag which can be attached to the bike, and then the user has to switch on the S-Bike mode from the smartphone’s settings. Once the mode is activated, the caller is greeted with a pre-recorded message saying the person is currently riding a motor-bike and can’t take calls. The caller has the option of pressing one in case of an urgent call and the biker will then have to stop to take the call. The S-Bike mode comes with a motion lock feature which prevents a user to take calls while riding.

The new J3, which is a dual-SIM 4G-ebabled smartphone also has an 8mega pixel rear camera and 5-inch HD amoled display.
