Smartphone users in India can start using their phone number to log in to apps and services on their mobile phones from Tuesday, with the country’s six leading operators rolling out the Mobile Connect authentication system.
The authentication system will make logging-in process simpler with just a click of a button taking the mobile phone number as a authorisation system, thus saving the mind space of users from remembering multiple log-in and passwords for different apps and services.

The Mobile Connect launch comes at a time when internet usage and smartphone users are increasing in the country, now pegged as the world’s second-biggest data market after China.
In India, the services will be available with all the six major operators – Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Telenor India, and Aircel – that offer mobile phone services using the more popular Global System for Mobile communications, or GSM technology. The minister of state for communications, Manoj Sinha will launch the technology.
Mobile Connect authentication is a joint effort by several companies including Visa Inc, that is needed to verify users for payments and transactions by operators across the world. The initiative is led by the GSMA, the global organisation of telecommunications companies that provide mobile phone services using the global system for mobile communications, or GSM technology.
