Qualcomm is eyeing the Apple’s M-series chips this time. The company is developing a new line of Arm-based chips for PCs, dubbed as Snapdragon X, that could pose strong competition for Apple’s M-series processors. It is expected to come in 2024 and will be based on Nuvia’s CPU cores, which were designed by former Apple engineers.

“Snapdragon X series platforms build on our years of experience engineering heterogeneous compute architectures across the central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU) and NPU. Now, harnessing our next-generation custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU, a quantum leap forward in performance and power efficiency will anchor Snapdragon X and – when combined with our NPU – will deliver accelerated on-device user experiences for the new era of generative AI,” the company announced.

The new chips not just come with new name but also with a new visual design system. It was decided based on the insights collected by Qualcomm. It says that X identifier distinguishes its PC platforms from other Snapdragon product categories. Also, this tiering structure helps users navigate company’s platform capabilities from mainstream to premium.

Qualcomm’s existing Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 platform already offers 5G connectivity, and it is likely that the Snapdragon X chips will continue to do so.

Overall, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chips pose a significant threat to Apple’s M-series processors. If Qualcomm can deliver on its promises, the Snapdragon X chips could offer similar or even better performance and efficiency than the M series chips.

The Snapdragon X chips could make Windows laptops a more attractive option for users who are looking for a powerful and efficient device with cellular connectivity.
