Initially slated for launching in late June, OpenAI’s ChatGPT “Voice mode” seems to be delayed. OpenAI announced on June 25 that it will delay the Voice Mode of ChatGPT and push it to July.

According to reports OpenAI faced some technical difficulties, which led them to delay the much awaited launch of ChatGPT’s Voice Mode.

What went wrong?

The news of delaying Voice Mode comes after OpenAI’s plans to extend and strengthen its AI capabilities. “We’re sharing an update on the advanced Voice Mode we demoed during our Spring Update, which we remain very excited about. We had planned to start rolling this out in alpha to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users in late June, but need one more month to reach our bar to launch,” OpenAI explained in a post on X.

In spite of the delay, OpenAI affirmed its commitment to delivering a high-quality product. After the initial release to a limited user base for feedback, the company is expected to make plans to make ‘Voice Mode’ available to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the coming months. It also plans to be contingent on successful safety and reliability checks.

What’s next

Earlier in May, OpenAI had unveiled its plans for GPT-4o. GPT-4o is an advanced AI model capable of realistic voice interactions and seamless communication across text and images. It seems that OpenAI aims to further solidify its position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, with the new ChatGPT Voice Mode.

It looks like to cover up the delay, OpenAI has come up with some new commitments. OpenAI explained that the delay came from the need to ensure a smooth and safe user experience. “For example, we’re improving the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content. We’re also working on improving the user experience and preparing our infrastructure to scale to millions while maintaining real-time responses,” OpenAI stated in a post on social media platform X.

Initially OpenAI had explained that GPT-4 still has many limitations that they  are working to address, such as social biases, hallucinations, and adversarial prompts. It is believed that ChatGPT’s advanced Voice Mode can understand and respond with emotions and non-verbal cues. With this new feature we might be moving closer to real-time, natural conversations with AI. Furthermore, OpenAI claims that their mission is to bring these new experiences to us thoughtfully.
