La Tomatina – a very messy tomato throwing festival (read ‘revelry’) in Spain gets a Google Doodle on its 70th anniversary today to mark the occasion and signal its growing importance.
The Google Doodle created by Nate Swinehart captures the energy of La Tomatina festival with an animation that shows several children enjoying the tomato fight while one kid is hanging up on pole with a scared emotion on his face.

About La Tomatina festival:
Paint the town red by throwing tomatoes galore -at everything and everybody around you. The message? There is no better or rather, bizarre, way to let go off all the rage/stress within you. And that, in essence, is all that the festival is all about. The fest has become very popular across the world and is featured across a lot of segments – from movies to ads and even private parties. La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Valencia in Spain.
Over 100,000 metric tons of tomatoes are pelted, thrown, tossed, chucked, catapulted, fired and launched at thousands of people in just an hour’s time.
The La Tomatina festival also extends to some serious after-event partying in Valencia, which guarantees the ultimate fruity fun to go on through the night.
But make sure you book your ticket well in advance as La Tomatina offers only 20,000 entries every year. In case you are reading this and want to join, you are already late!
