Google has announced a new AI-powered scam detection tool for Android users to combat the rising threat of text message scams. This feature protects users from “conversational text scams” that often begin with seemingly innocent messages but evolve into dangerous schemes. Google’s scam detection tool monitors SMS, MMS, and RCS messages in real-time, identifying suspicious patterns and alerting users with a warning when a potential scam is detected. Once a scam is flagged, users can quickly block or report the sender.
“Scam Detection in Google Messages uses powerful Google AI to proactively address conversational scams by providing real-time detection even after initial messages are received. When the on-device AI detects a suspicious pattern in SMS, MMS, and RCS messages, users will now get a message warning of a likely scam with an option to dismiss or report and block the sender,” Google said in its blog post.
The scam detection tool is initially rolling out in the US, UK, and Canada, with plans for further expansion to more regions in the near future. The feature is designed to focus on messages from senders not saved in users’ contact lists, ensuring that it doesn’t intrude on personal conversations with trusted contacts.
In addition to the new scam detection, Google is also rolling out a location-sharing feature within the Find My app. This tool allows Android users to share their real-time location with trusted contacts, making it easier to coordinate meetups or ensure loved ones’ safety. The location information is safely stored, and users can specify for how long they want to share their data, with regular reminders about who has access to it.
For Pixel users, Google has introduced several exciting features. Pixel 9 owners can now connect multiple cameras, including GoPro devices or other Pixel phones, for multicamera streaming on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Additionally, Pixel Studio now allows users to create stylized images and stickers of people, offering more creative freedom while preventing misuse.
Pixel 9 devices also gain support for satellite messaging through Verizon and T-Mobile, as well as new suggestions in Pixel Screenshots to help users organise their screenshots automatically. Other updates for Pixel devices include improved transcription services for Pixel Watches, Tablets, and phones running Android 6 and newer, making it easier for users to transfer and transcribe old audio recordings.
