Apple may bid adieu to Touch IDs forever. According to latest reports on Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup, it has come to light that the Touch ID fingerprint authentication technology is unlikely to make a return.
According to an integrated circuit expert’s post on Weibo, first spotted by macrumours, the equipment used to manufacture the chips for iPhone Touch ID has been permanently shut down, with the remaining units allocated for the third-generation iPhone SE.
There are also reports that the fourth-generation iPhone SE will adopt Face ID, replacing the last iPhone model featuring Touch ID. While Face ID is expected to be prominent in upcoming models, persistent rumours hint at Apple’s ongoing development of under-display fingerprint technology, potentially making its debut around 2026. This aligns with the speculated timeframe for integrating Face ID beneath the device’s display.

Apple is expected to unveil several new products in the early 2024. The company is said to launch a new M3 Mac Mini, an updated 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models, and the Apple Vision Pro.
There are also rumours that Apple could launch a 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with OLED display, an iPad Air, third-generation AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and a refreshed Apple TV later in the same year.
One of the biggest rumours so far is that Apple is working on a foldable tablet and could launch it in 2025 or beyond. According to Digitimes report, Apple is working on a foldable iPad with its production slated to start by the end of the next year.
