The Ganga is regarded as one of the nation’s most fortunate rivers as goddess Ganga is worshipped on this auspicious day because it is thought that on the day of Ganga Saptami, the goddess descends to earth to bless her devotees. Every year, on the Saptami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Vaisakha, people commemorate Ganga Saptami. In order to obtain the blessings of Goddess Ganga, worshippers swarm the banks of the Ganga River on this day to perform puja and take a holy dip.

According to Hindu mythology, the day of Ganga Dussehra is when the Ganges are said to have descended on Earth. Lord Shiva grabbed her in his hair to stop her from washing away the Earth and to lessen her violent descent. The Ganges was then freed by Lord Shiva, enabling her to carry out her duty of cleansing Bhagiratha’s forefathers’ cursed souls.
