Cover with style: How phone cases are becoming a fashion accessory

Phone covers have in recent years taken on a life of their own. From model Hailey Bieber’s slick-looking lip balm phone case to social media sensation Orhan Awatramani aka Orry’s lobsters, peeled bananas, lizards with long tails and a butcher knife, theme-based phone-cases are a rage.

Upgrading to the new iPhone? A smartphone case is recommended. Beats, the Apple-owned audio brand, is now making cases for the new phone. What’s different? The cases offer MagSafe compatibility and support for the new camera control button. Available in four colours, they are  priced at Rs 4,900. It can be ordered from Apple’s website. In line with Apple’s environmental commitments, the packaging for these cases is 100% fibre-based, using recycled or responsibly sourced wood fibres.

The phone case that the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, carried during the COP28 summit featured ‘affirmations for anxiety’. A gift from her daughter, the case featured phrases such as ‘I’ve got my back,’ ‘My anxiety doesn’t define me,’ ‘I give myself permission to take a break,’ and ‘I am enough.’

Phone covers double up as daily use objects like wallets, keychains, maps, and some essential items. Like Hailey Bieber, who designed a cover based on her own skincare line Rhode’s flagship product, a lip balm. Many other designs are modellled on straps, rings, or mounts for easy grip and hold.

However, the hyper customisation plays an important role in making phone covers into a swanky accessory. Take the case of the unconventional fashion choices of Orry. A social media sensation, a love for edgy phone cases make him a trendsetter.

Smartphone users like to grab a case that is chic and has a screen protector. A phone case, on the other hand, may not guarantee protection against cracks, but it makes a fashion statement to protect your expensive investment. Many brands offer

cases to safeguard the phone. But if you’re a fashionista, then opt from classic solid patterns to vibrant

geometric designs, floral prints, abstract art, and even personalised options with photos or initials.

Some are multifunctional covers with features like card slots and kickstands, adding convenience to your daily routine. The variety of mobile phone covers is humungous in design and format.

From apple-shaped covers to Barbie-styled, psychedelic colours, there is a huge variety on offer for Android, and iPhone.

The market is flooded with options on e-commerce sites. Among the new-age startups that specialise in this category are casekidukaan, Zapvi, Bewakoof, Dailyobjects, Million Cases, propshop24, Cover It Up, Sirphire, Boujee and many more offering ample variety. Delhi-based Boujee has premium designer phone cases and accessories that marry luxury with affordability.

Kalakaar Indiaa guarantees protection from impact, scratch and dust in slim and lightweight cases. It has a unique collection of cases featuring designs of art, mandala, geometrics, animals, quotes and more in trendy colours.

A silicone case is extremely flexible to give the phone a fantastic grip. What is most important is that the phones in India must be protected from dust or lint.

Leather cases are more durable than silicone or plastic. Plastic cases are good for heavy impact.

Chennai-based Pop it Out has designer-built mobile accessories bringing handy comfort to mobile phones. For consumer electronics accessory company, PopSockets, India is one of our fastest-growing markets, with consumers seeking both style and protection in phone accessories. The brand has bridged this gap with its flagship feature PopGrip—nearly 300 million sold globally—which offers an ergonomic grip and doubles as a stand.

“As the inventor and IP owner of the original phone grip, we’ve built a trusted brand present in over 70 countries, combining functionality with style,” says David Barnett, founder of the brand, which recently introduced a premium line of MagSafe-compatible phone cases with 10 feet drop protection and sustainable materials. “Unlike the US market, India’s phone cover category remains fragmented, but the premium segment is growing rapidly as consumers prioritise quality and style,” says Barnett.
