The much-anticipated sequel Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, has set the box office on fire with an explosive opening on Independence Day. Surpassing all expectations, the film has outperformed this year’s blockbuster Gadar 2, which kicked off its box office journey with Rs 40.1 crore, IE reported.
Stree 2 enjoyed a strong start with preview shows on Wednesday evening, followed by its official release on Thursday. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film has amassed a staggering Rs 54.35 crore in just two days, with Rs 46 crore coming from Thursday’s collections and Rs 8.35 crore from the preview shows.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 is now the biggest Hindi film opener of 2023, leaving behind the previous record-holder, Fighter, which made Rs 24.6 crore on its opening day in January. Across languages, however, the title of the biggest Indian opener still belongs to Kalki 2898 AD, which brought in a massive Rs 95 crore.
Stree 2 witnessed an impressive overall occupancy of 77.09 percent on Thursday. The Delhi-NCR region saw the highest turnout, with 1200 shows running at 86.75 percent occupancy. Mumbai followed closely, with 1103 shows and an 81 percent occupancy rate, IE reported.
Released on Independence Day, Stree 2 is poised to capitalize on the extended five-day weekend, with Monday being a holiday for Raksha Bandhan in many parts of India.
Stree 2 clashed with John Abraham’s Vedaa and Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein. Despite being released in multiple languages, Vedaa managed to earn only Rs 6.52 crore, while Khel Khel Mein brought in a modest Rs 5 crore.
