NEET merit list 2017: After Central government intervention over Tamil Nadu request to exempt it from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) this year, the Directorate of Medical Education is expected to announce the merit list and counselling dates on Wednesday at its official website – tnhealth.org and tnmedicalselection.org.
According to PTI, the Supreme Court today asked the Tamil Nadu government to start counselling for admissions to MBBS and BDS seats based on the NEET merit list and complete the process by September 4. The apex court had on August 17 put on hold the counselling for the medical seats in the state. SC also asked the state government and the MCI to come up with a balance solution to tackle the interest of the state board students and also of those who have already cleared the NEET.
After the Central government told the court that it was not in favour of the recent ordinance passed by Tamil Nadu, the bench of judges headed by Justice Dipak Misra directed the State government to start the admission process. The apex court was hearing a plea filed by six students seeking a direction to the state government to conduct counselling for the medical seats solely on the basis of the merit list prepared on the basis of NEET.
The plea filed by the students also alleged that State Ministers were bargaining with the Central government for presidential assent for their proposed ordinance to exempt Tamil Nadu students from the NEET. This was in favour for supporting the NDA candidates for the presidential and vice-presidential polls, reported PTI.
According to a report by Indian Express, the Directorate of Medical Education had received 50,558 applications from the aspirants of which 31,323 were seeking admissions to 2,594 seats.
