Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena announced the creation of 200 additional Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) posts on Saturday in the government schools of the capital. This is to deal with a scarcity in PGT posts that previously caused a tussle between existing student needs and shortage of teachers in these schools.
Delhi’s government schools have been facing the challenge of recruiting students with disabilities ever since the launch of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act in 2010.
As many as 9,500 CWD students are studying in Delhi government schools from classes 9 to 12, according to a note by the L-G’s Office, however available PGTs are just 283 while there are 18 vacancies out of 301 sanctioned posts.
Six hundred nine government schools have children with disabilities at the senior secondary level, and they need PGT (Special Education) services to effectively support their inclusive education needs. “The present number of teachers is not sufficient enough to cover all these students full-time,” said L-G’s office.
Such a policy would immensely help the child in terms of inclusive education in Delhi as promised under the Right to Education Act, 2009, along with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and the National Education Policy 2020.
The L-G gave his approval after detailed scrutiny initiated by the Delhi Education Department, which had scrutinized the problems faced by teachers and sought feedback from various departments before making the approval final.
The DSSSB would now fill up the newly approved posts. These are pay matrix level 8 Group ‘B’ posts with salaries between Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,100.
The L-G’s office also made a point of filling all vacant posts in government schools through timely exams conducted by DSSSB.
The DSSSB currently handles all recruitment processes of various teaching posts.
