The stampede at the Baba Siddheshwar Nath Temple in Jehanabad district, Bihar, which resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, was triggered by a brawl between the Kanwariyas and a flower vendor, according to multiple media reports.
An eyewitness, who sustained some injuries, explained to the media that if the administration had handled the situation better, the flower seller wouldn’t have gotten into a confrontation. He described a violent altercation that unfolded right in front of him, leaving many people stuck in the chaos.
He was eventually rescued by someone who pulled him out of the dangerous situation. The exact cause however, is still under investigation.
The injured individuals were transported to medical centers in Mukundapur and surrounding regions. Of these, 10 were treated and sent home after receiving initial care, while six remain hospitalized.
Due to the large number of pilgrims at the temple, senior district officials and police have been stationed on-site. Security personnel swiftly responded to the incident and managed to restore order.
The administration has announced that each family of the deceased will receive Rs 20,000 for the last rites, on top of a Rs 4 lakh ex gratia payment. Those injured in the incident will be given Rs 50,000 each, according to officials. The tragic incident took place at the Vanavar hill of Makhdumpur block area.
