In a surprising move within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), six MLAs from Nadia district have lodged a formal complaint against Mahua Moitra, the party MP from Krishnanagar. The legislators have accused Moitra of fostering factionalism within the party and undermining its unity. The complaint was sent to party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging action against Moitra, reports Indian Express.
Allegations of Ignoring Local MLAs
The complaint, which has been signed by five TMC MLAs from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency and one MLA from Karimpur, raises concerns over Moitra’s conduct since her re-election to the Lok Sabha in June. The lawmakers claim that Moitra has systematically sidelined the Assembly representatives in her area while pushing forward her agenda.
The MLAs, including Bimalendu Sinha Roy (Karimpur), Rukbanur Rahman (Chapra), Kallol Khan (Nakashipara), Manik Bhattacharya (Palashipara), Ujjwal Biswas (Krishnanagar South), and Nasiruddin Ahmed (Kaliganj), allege that Moitra has failed to involve them in party activities in their constituencies. Instead, she is accused of working with her group of loyalists, neglecting the party structure on the ground.
Claims of Fostering Instability
The complaint also raises serious concerns about Moitra’s alleged involvement with “anti-social elements” from the region, which the MLAs believe has harmed the party’s image, particularly among minority voters. The MLAs claim that Moitra’s actions have fostered instability within the district, especially by engaging with opposition groups.
Moreover, the letter mentions that Moitra has been absent from crucial anti-BJP campaigns in the district, a situation that contradicts the party’s agenda. The MLAs also highlighted that Moitra has been making promises to block leaders that their incumbents might be replaced with new candidates in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. This, they argue, is further exacerbating the rift within the party.
Disrupting Party Functions
The disgruntled MLAs assert that Moitra’s actions have disrupted party functions, making it increasingly difficult for local leaders to carry out their duties. According to one MLA, who wished to remain anonymous, Moitra is seen associating with individuals involved in criminal activities and extortion, which is tarnishing the TMC’s image in the region.
The legislators have called for disciplinary action against Moitra, urging the leadership to address these internal conflicts. Their complaint has also been submitted to Trinamool state president Subrata Bakshi.
Party’s Response and Further Developments
The complaints against Mahua Moitra were verbally communicated to the party leadership after the winter session of the Assembly began. Following this, the MLAs were instructed to submit a formal, written complaint. While there has been no official response from Moitra or the party leadership yet, this development suggests increasing tensions within the TMC.
Notably, the letter has not been signed by two key MLAs—Tehatta MLA Tapas Saha and Krishnanagar North MLA Mukul Roy—indicating that some party members may not be in agreement with the complaints.
Growing Rift within TMC?
The dispute between Mahua Moitra and the MLAs from Nadia district highlights an escalating rift within the Trinamool Congress. With the party’s internal unity at stake, the matter now rests in the hands of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the party leadership. How the leadership addresses these grievances could have significant implications for the TMC’s future cohesion and electoral prospects in the region.
