Polling across the 119 seats took place on November 30 and witnessed a voter turnout of 70.60 per cent. In the 2018 elections, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), earlier known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), made a thumping return to power bagging 87 seats, way ahead of the magic figure of 60. The Prajakutami (People’s Alliance), forged by the Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Jana Samithi and CPI, won 22 seats, while AIMIM secured seven seats. KCR returned for a second term as chief minister after being unanimously elected as leader of the TRS Legislature Party.

While incumbent Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar-led BRS is trying to come to power for a third consecutive term, Opposition Congress under the leadership of state president A Revanth Reddy, has mounted an all-out effort to oust the ruling party. The BRS has been in power since 2014 when the previous UPA government at the Centre carved Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh. The BJP has also conducted an elaborate campaign with a host of top leaders, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state BJP president G Kishan Reddy, addressing rallies in the state.
