The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure system as of Tuesday and is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu through December 13.
Today, heavy to very heavy rain is expected to pour over isolated places in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai and Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal.
Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram districts, as well as in Puducherry.
In a bulletin, the IMD-Regional Meteorological Centre reported that the low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east equatorial Indian Ocean, observed on December 9, has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area.
“The associated upper air cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric levels. The system is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka–Tamil Nadu coasts during the next 24 hours,” the update added.
Widespread rainfall is expected across Tamil Nadu on December 12 and 13, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in isolated areas. The forecast covers the Cauvery delta region, as well as central, western, northern, and southern parts of the state.
From December 11 to 13, fishermen have been advised against venturing into sea.
