In a major development in the investigation of the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, Mumbai Police have confirmed that the suspect, Shariful Islam, matches with the individual captured in CCTV footage from Khan’s residence. This confirmation has been made on the basis of a face recognition test conducted at the Kalina Forensic Lab. During the test it was verified that Islam’s image matches with the person seen coming down the stairs in the footage.
The incident took place in the early hours on January 16, 2025, when the attacker got inside the Khan’s Mumbai home. After the attack he was taken to the Lilavati Hospital, where an emergency surgery was done on him to remove the knife which was inserted in his thoracic spinal cord and for stopping the leakage of the spinal fluid. Medical professionals later stated that Khan is out of danger and recovering on a steady basis.
Following the attack, authorities launched a detailed investigation, leading to the arrest of Islam, a 30-year old Bangladeshi national who had allegedly entered India illegally and had used a false identity. As per initial evidence, Islam entered Khan’s home with an intention to steal. He was held on the outskirts of Mumbai, where he had been staying for several months.
The face recognition test’s result has strengthened the case against Islam and has provided important evidence in linking him to the crime scene.
