Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination papers for the Varanasi constituency (which he has represented since 2014) on Tuesday amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. PM Modi has declared in his election affidavit that he has Rs 3.02 crore in gross moveable assets, up from Rs 2.5 crore in the 2019 affidavit, and he owns neither a car nor a house.

He has no liabilities and his affidavit also shows that there are no criminal cases against him.

In the affidavit, PM Modi had declared total assets worth Rs 3.02 crore, compared to Rs 2.5 crore as of 2019, the bulk of which is made up of a fixed deposit worth Rs 2.86 crore with the State Bank of India (SBI). His total cash in hand is Rs 52,920 and he has Rs 80,304 in two bank accounts in Gandhinagar and Varanasi.

PM Modi had declared about Rs 43 lakh in assets during the 2007 Assembly elections; this figure increased to over Rs 1 crore in the 2012 Assembly election, growing at a CAGR (Compound annual growth rate) of 25 per cent over the five-year period. In his 2014 Lok Sabha election affidavit, PM Modi declared Rs 1.5 crore in total assets, which rose to over Rs 2.5 crore as declared in his 2019 affidavit.

His assets grew at a CAGR of 3.6 per cent between 2019 and 2024. This is slower than the 10.6 per cent CAGR seen during his first term from 2014 to 2019.

This year’s election affidavit further states that PM Modi’s taxable income doubled from Rs 11 lakh in fiscal year 2018-19 to Rs 23.5 lakh in 2022-23.

The PM has Rs 9.12 lakh as an investment in National Savings Certificates (NSC) and also has four gold rings worth Rs 2,67,750.

Under the education section, the PM has declared has declared that he completed his Bachelor of Arts from Delhi University in 1978 and Master of Arts from Gujarat University in 1983.

PM Modi, who first contested from Varanasi in 2014 as NDA’s prime ministerial candidate, is seeking a third consecutive term from the seat, where voting will be held on June 1 in the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

On Tuesday, when PM Modi went to the Varanasi district collectorate to file his nomination, he was accompanied by the top BJP leaders. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and BJP chief JP Nadda were among the leaders who were seen with the Prime Minister.

PM Modi was also accompanied by his four proposers — Pandit Ganeshwar Shastri, Lalchand Kushwaha, Baijnath Patel and Sanjay Sonkar.
