Kolkata’s Sealdah Court on Friday (December 13) granted bail to former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital ex-principal Sandip Ghosh in the rape and murder case of an on-duty doctor. Officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal was also granted bail.
Mondal was accused of delaying the filing of an FIR in the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at R G Kar Hospital on August 9, while Ghosh faced allegations of tampering with evidence related to the case.
Both were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is handling the investigation into the rape-murder case following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
The Sealdah court’s additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) granted bail to the two accused because the chargesheet against them was not filed within the mandatory 90-day period, according to Ghosh’s lawyer.
Mondal’s lawyer confirmed that he would soon be released from the correctional home, where he had been held on judicial remand. However, Ghosh, who is also on judicial remand in another case involving alleged financial irregularities at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, will remain in custody despite being granted bail in the rape-murder case.
