The West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors (WBJPD) has announced a 10-day sit-in protest in Kolkata, starting Tuesday, to demand accountability in the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case.

The protest follows the bail of two key suspects—Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station—granted by a Sealdah sessions court on Friday after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at the state-run hospital.

The junior doctor was found raped and murdered on the morning of August 9 in the hospital’s seminar room, sparking outrage nationwide.

The WBJPD, a coalition of five medical associations, will stage its demonstration at the Doreena Crossing until December 26. Dr Punyabrata Gun, joint convener of the WBJPD, stated that the group is pressing for the immediate submission of the CBI’s supplementary chargesheet, as PTI reported.

In a letter to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, WBJPD sought permission to set up a temporary stage for the protest, assuring compliance with all legal and safety protocols.

The organisation also requested police protection to ensure the safety of participants during the peaceful demonstration.

The WBJPD recently marched to the CBI office at Salt Lake’s CGO Complex, urging swifter action in the case.

The case took a turn on Friday when a Sealdah court granted bail to two suspects, Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, ex-officer-in-charge of Tala police station.

Both were released after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 90-day period, raising concerns over the investigation’s progress.
