The high-level committee, headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, on Thursday, submitted its report on ‘One Nation, One Election’ to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is also a member of the panel, was also present.

The report comprises 18,626 pages and is an outcome of extensive consultations with stakeholders, experts and research work over 191 days since the committee was constituted on September 2, 2023, ANI reported.

The committee has also proposed the adoption of a unified electoral roll and electoral photo identity cards (EPIC) for elections at all levels of governance.

The other members of the panel led by Kovind are – Home Minister Amit Shah, former leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former finance commission chairman N K Singh, former Lok Sabha secretary general Subhash Kashyap and senior advocate Harish Salve.

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept refers to holding simultaneous polls across the country. The proposal is to conduct elections for Lok Sabha and all state assemblies at the same time.

In India, the Lok Sabha elections to elect the members of Parliament and state assembly polls are held separately when the tenure of the incumbent government comes to an end or it gets dissolved for some reason.
