The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that isolated, extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra for the next two days, with conditions expected to ease gradually thereafter. Additionally, Central India is expected to experience very heavy rainfall over the next two days, followed by heavy rainfall during the subsequent three days.

The IMD also indicated that northern India will see moderate rainfall throughout the week, with widespread light to moderate rains and thunderstorms predicted for regions including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. 

Delhi wakes up to heavy rainfall

The national capital was hit by heavy rains and thunderstorms this morning, providing a welcome break from the persistent humidity. IMD on Friday morning predicted that Delhi and the NCR region are expected to see additional rainfall in the day. Areas such as Narela, Alipur, Badili, and parts of the NCR including Ghaziabad and Gurugram are forecasted for light drizzle or rain. Specific areas like Seemapuri and Patel Nagar are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall. IMD has issued a “yellow” alert for the city through Saturday, with forecasts predicting that rains will persist in the capital until July 28.

IMD issues orange alert for Mumbai

IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai on July 26 and a yellow alert for July 27. According to their press release, “Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra from July 25-27, in Konkan & Goa on July 25 and 26, and in the Gujarat region on July 25.” Additionally, the IMD has issued a red alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Satara on July 26, with an orange alert for Raigad on July 27.

Heavy rains batter Pune

Heavy rains caused significant disruption in Pune, Maharashtra, where at least four people lost their lives in rain-related incidents on Thursday, and many low-lying areas were submerged. In response to the severe weather, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools on Friday in Bhor, Velha, Maval, Mulshi, Haveli, Ambedgaon, Junnar tehsils, and Pimpri Chinchwad. According to the India Meteorological Department, Shivajinagar in Pune recorded 114 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 am on Thursday, marking the third-highest single-day rainfall in 66 years.

IMD predicts more showers for Madhya Pradesh

Heavy rains across several parts of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday led to widespread water-logging, prompting officials to open sluice gates at some dams to control water levels. Social media footage depicted flooded drains, and in Katni district, railway staff were seen assisting a locomotive driver through inundated tracks. The IMD has forecasted more heavy to very heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, for isolated areas in Madhya Pradesh on Friday.
