Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday, brought attention to the challenges faced by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) employees. Gandhi emphasised that those responsible for ensuring the smooth journey of lakhs of passengers daily have received nothing but injustice in return.
Sharing a video of his interaction with DTC employees last week, where he also took a bus ride, Gandhi posted on X, questioning why permanent citizens are forced to work in temporary jobs. “A few days ago, after a pleasant bus ride in Delhi, I interacted with DTC employees and got to know about their daily routine and problems,” the former Congress chief stated in Hindi.
Insecurity and unstable employment
Gandhi pointed out that DTC employees suffer from a lack of social security, unstable income, and no permanent job, reducing a job of great responsibility to one of compulsion. He highlighted that while drivers and conductors live with the uncertainty of their future, home guards responsible for passenger safety have not received their salaries for six months.
Expressing concern over the looming threat of privatisation, Gandhi noted that DTC workers, like other government employees across the country, live in constant fear. “These are the people who run India, making the journey of lakhs of passengers smooth every day. But if they have gotten anything in return for their dedication, it is only injustice,” he remarked.
Gandhi underscored the demands of the DTC employees, which include equal work, equal pay, and complete justice. He voiced their collective question to the government, “If we are permanent citizens, why are our jobs temporary?”
Uber ride and bus interaction
In the video, Gandhi is seen taking an Uber ride with a driver he had previously travelled with, during which he highlighted the issues faced by gig workers. The ride led to his interaction with DTC drivers, conductors, and marshals near the Sarojini Nagar Bus Depot last Wednesday.
Gandhi shared pictures of his interaction and bus ride on Facebook, stating, “There was a meeting and discussion with the driver and conductor brothers, and bus marshals in Delhi and then a fun ride in a DTC bus. A talk with loved ones on their issues!” His posts on social media continue to bring attention to the struggles faced by these essential workers.
