While the counting of much anticipated Pune Municipal elections (PMC) is underway, the fate of all major parties including Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, Congress and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) are under the fray. As many as 26,34,800 voters had exercised their franchised in the polls for 162 seats in Pune which will soon decide whether the NCP will continue to be at the helm or BJP will take over the civic body. Surprisingly, the rural districts of Pune had registered a record high voting percentage of 70 per cent for Zila Parishad and Panchayat as compared to the 55.5 per cent voting turnout in the PMC elections.

With both BJP and Shiv Sena locking horns after ending a decade old alliance, Congress party wishes to benefit and to emerge as the winner in today’s counting of votes. Despite Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) announced freebies to motivate voters to exercise their voting rights, the body claimed that that they expected a turnout of 65-70 per cent, but the actual voter turnaround was way to low.
