Prime Minister Narendra Modi was felicitated by the NDA MPs at the key Parliamentary meet on Tuesday. The PM was being felicitated for the success of Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev. While addressing the MPs, PM Modi took a direct hit at the Opposition saying that they made a ‘mistake’ by asking the government to hold a discussion on Op Sindoor. He also said that the Opposition didn’t allow for the constitution to be applied in Jammu and Kashmir. Modi noted that the BJP-led government abrogated article 370 and laid the foundation of Ram Mandir on August 5. He also vowed to eliminate Naxalism and leave ‘no stone unturned’ in their effort to do so. The meeting is still underway.
It is worth noting that the meeting is being held at a rare time and after a long gap. In fact, it comes at a time when Parliament’s monsoon session has mostly remained stalled. The Opposition has disrupted many proceedings, except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. So what made the PM call for a NDA parliamentary meet in the middle of the session?
Will PM Modi pick a Vice-Presidential nominee?
The meeting is being held ahead of the Vice-President election process that is set to kick off on August 7. The meet could likely bring NDA allies together and plan a common strategy to nominate their Vice Presidential candidate.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and BJP national general secretaries are expected to work with NDA allies to finalise the name of the Vice-Presidential nominee, a PTI report said.
Since the 2024 general election, where BJP lost its single-party majority and had to rely on allies, these parliamentary meetings have been expanded to include parties like TDP, JD(U), and LJP (Ram Vilas). The last such gathering was held on July 2.
What’s on agenda?
PM Modi is expected to address the following key points in his upcoming speech:-
-Defend the Election Commission against claims of favoritism towards the BJP.
-Speak about the April 22 terror attack and detail how the government responded promptly.
-NDA leaders may formally appreciate the Prime Minister’s leadership during the terror attack and the swift military response that followed.
-Discuss the political strategy and coordination among NDA allies ahead of the Vice Presidential election nomination.
-Rally support within the NDA to ensure unity and announce their candidate by August 21 for the VP election nomination.
