In his first official call with the PM of Nepal’s interim government Sushila Karki, PM Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the loss of lives in the recent ‘Gen Z’ protests. “Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki…reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow,” PM Modi said in X post.

Rising from the ‘Gen Z’ protests

Earlier this month, Nepal witnessed two days of intense protests by the youth over the issues of corruption, nepotism in politics and ban of social media platforms. The protests culminated in the collapse of KP Sharma Oli’s government on September 8.

Sushila Karki, a former Chief Justice and the first woman to hold both the posts of Chief Justice and Prime Minister, was sworn in as interim leader later. Backed by the Gen Z movement, her name was endorsed by protesters for being “neutral and credible” in her stance. She will serve until March 5, 2026. Fresh parliamentary elections next year will elect Nepal’s new government.

Indian Ambassador to Nepal meets Karki

Earlier this week, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava paid a courtesy call on Karki at her office in Singha Durbar. Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Srivastava conveyed Modi’s congratulatory message and reiterated India’s commitment to strengthen ties between the two countries.

Ambassador Srivastava conveyed the congratulatory message from Hon. Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, to the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister on her appointment as the Prime Minister of Nepal and expressed India’s commitment to work together for further strengthening the close bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries,” Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on X.
