Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to Kuwait on December 21-22, marking a historic milestone in India’s bilateral relations with the West Asian nation. This visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 43 years, comes at the invitation of Kuwait’s Amir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The visit is poised to strengthen political, economic, and cultural ties between the two countries.

During his stay, PM Modi will meet with the Emir of Kuwait and Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah. Discussions will also be held with the Kuwaiti Prime Minister, covering a wide array of topics such as trade, investment, energy cooperation, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people connections. The Prime Minister will also receive a ceremonial guard of honour at the Bayan Palace, reflecting the importance of this visit.

Ahead of his departure, PM Modi said, “Today, I am embarking on a two-day visit to Kuwait at the invitation of Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait. We deeply value the historical connection with Kuwait that has been nurtured over generations. We are not just strong trade and energy partners, but also have shared interest in peace, security, stability and prosperity in the West Asia region. I look forward to my meetings with His Highness the Amir, the Crown Prince and the Prime Minister of Kuwait. It would be an opportunity to chalk out a roadmap for a futuristic partnership for the benefit of our people and the region.”

“I eagerly look forward to meeting the Indian diaspora in Kuwait who have immensely contributed to strengthening of bonds of friendship between the two nations. I express my gratitude to the leadership of Kuwait for the special gesture of inviting me to the inauguration ceremony of the Arabian Gulf Cup, a premier sporting event in the Gulf region. I look forward to being a part of this celebration of athletic excellence and regional unity. I am confident that this visit will further strengthen and reinforce the special ties and bonds of friendship between the people of India and Kuwait,” PM Modi adds.

Strengthening Political and Economic Relations

India and Kuwait share a long-standing relationship rooted in historical and cultural connections. In recent years, high-level exchanges, including meetings during the United Nations General Assembly and other ministerial visits, have injected momentum into bilateral ties. Kuwait is one of India’s top trading partners, with bilateral trade exceeding USD 10 billion in 2023-24. Discussions during PM Modi’s visit aim to expand investments in renewable energy, technology, and healthcare.

Focus on Energy Cooperation

As a vital energy partner, Kuwait supplies a significant portion of India’s crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) needs. The visit is expected to deepen this cooperation, focusing on energy security and exploring opportunities for clean and sustainable energy alternatives. Kuwait’s status as the sixth-largest supplier of crude oil to India underscores its importance in meeting the country’s growing energy demands.

Engaging with the Indian Community

A key highlight of PM Modi’s visit is his interaction with the Indian diaspora in Kuwait, which numbers over one million. He will visit a labour camp to emphasise the government’s commitment to the welfare of Indian workers abroad. The Indian community in Kuwait plays a significant role in strengthening bilateral ties, contributing to various sectors such as construction, healthcare, and hospitality.

Cultural and Security Cooperation

India and Kuwait have a rich tradition of cultural exchanges, with Indian cinema, music, and cuisine widely popular in Kuwait. Recent initiatives like the Festival of India in March 2023 and the launch of a Hindi radio program in 2024 have further enhanced these ties. On the security front, both nations share a commitment to regional stability and have collaborated on counterterrorism and maritime security initiatives.

PM Modi’s visit to Kuwait marks a significant step in elevating the India-Kuwait partnership to new heights. With a focus on energy, trade, and people-to-people connections, this visit sets the stage for deeper and more diversified collaboration. The shared historical ties and a mutual vision for growth ensure that the relationship between India and Kuwait will continue to thrive in the years ahead.
