Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Brasilia on Tuesday morning for his state visit to Brazil. He was warmly received at the airport by Brazil’s Minister of Defence, Jose Mucio Monteiro Filho. The arrival ceremony featured a traditional Brazilian Samba Reggae performance, which PM Modi praised, calling it a delightful start to his visit. The Prime Minister is in Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, following his participation in the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro from July 6–7.

Strengthening India-Brazil partnership

During his stay in Brasilia, PM Modi is set to hold bilateral talks with President Lula aimed at expanding the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), discussions will focus on cooperation in trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and people-to-people exchanges. The visit signals India’s growing outreach to Latin America and its intent to build stronger ties with major regional economies.

BRICS Summit

PM Modi described the BRICS Summit in Rio as “very productive.” He highlighted that extensive discussions with fellow leaders and bilateral meetings helped enhance India’s global diplomatic footprint. In a video shared on social media, Modi showcased his engagements in Rio, including a warm reception from the Indian diaspora and his participation in the traditional BRICS family photo.

He lauded Brazil’s efforts during its BRICS Presidency and reaffirmed India’s commitment to lead the group with a renewed vision during its own chairmanship next year. “Under India’s BRICS Chairmanship, we will define BRICS in a new form: ‘Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability,’” he said at a session on environment and global health.

Talks with Uruguay on trade expansion

On the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, PM Modi also met with Uruguay’s President Yamandu Orsi. Their discussion centered on the expansion of the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement and deepening collaboration in digital infrastructure, defence, railways, and energy.

Next stop: Namibia

After completing his engagements in Brazil, PM Modi will travel to Namibia on July 9. He is scheduled to address the Namibian Parliament, continuing his five-nation tour that has already taken him to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and now Brazil. The visit underscores India’s broader diplomatic ambition to strengthen ties across the Global South.
