Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday won the crucial floor test by garnering votes from 129 MLAs in the state Assembly. The vote of confidence took place amid a walk out staged by the Opposition.

The Bihar Assembly has a strength of 243 MLAs and the majority required to win the trust vote was 122. The Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in the state clinched 129 votes. The NDA, includes JD(U), BJP, former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha and an Independent.

Amid the Opposition walk out, Nitish Kumar first proved his majority by voice vote. However, later, he insisted on vote counting. He won the vote of confidence with 129 votes in favour against none in opposition to his government.

Ahead of voting, the Janata Dal (United) chief accused Tejashwi Yadav’s party of corruption, claiming “they were minting money”.

Meanwhile, during the session, three Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLAs – Prahlad Yadav, Neelam Devi and Chetan Anand – switched over to the NDA’s side and voted for Nitish Kumar’s government.

The RJD suffered a double blow on Monday when three of its MLAs switched over to the other side and a no-confidence motion was passed against Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary and he was removed after 125 members voted in favour of the resolution and 112 against the same.
