Mumbai rains today: Mumbai continued to face heavy rains for the second day in a row on Monday, with the Colaba coastal observatory recording more than 100 mm of rainfall between Sunday and Monday morning. The downpour caused waterlogging in several areas and led to major traffic problems across the city.

IMD issues red alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune and nearby areas including Thane, Raigad and Mumbai on Monday.

According to the IMD, Pune, Raigad, Satara and Aurangabad are likely to see heavy showers and thunderstorms and an orange alert has been declared for these regions.

Traffic disruptions due to waterlogging

The continuous rain overnight caused severe waterlogging in several pockets of Mumbai, creating chaos during the morning rush hours. The Andheri subway had to be shut due to flooding, and traffic was diverted to Gokhale Bridge, the Mumbai traffic police said.

Colaba received 134.4 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till Monday morning, while Santacruz recorded 73.2 mm. Other parts of the city also saw significant rainfall – Bandra (82 mm), Byculla (73 mm), Tata Power area (70.5 mm) and Juhu (45 mm), according to IMD data.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the island city division received the highest average rainfall with over 100 mm, followed by 76.46 mm in the eastern suburbs and 74.15 mm in the western suburbs.

The latest downpour followed a wet weekend, when Santacruz recorded 87 mm of rain between Saturday and Sunday, and Colaba received 19.4 mm. Despite September usually being the driest of the monsoon months, Mumbai’s suburbs generally receive around 360 mm of rainfall during this month, and this year’s showers have already crossed high levels in several areas.
