As heavy rains continued to batter Mumbai for the third consecutive day, a tragic incident occurred on Saturday at Grant Road where one person died after portions of a balcony collapsed.
The incident was reported at 11 am inside Rubinissa Manzil near Grant Road railway station when part of a balcony gave way. According to the BMC, 7-8 people were still trapped on the fourth floor and three individuals sustained injuries.
Mumbai has experienced over 100 mm of rainfall for the last three days and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts similar weather conditions to persist today and tomorrow. The Colaba observatory recorded 111 mm of rain, while the Santacruz station recorded 79 mm between Friday and Saturday morning.
Data from the BMC’s automatic weather station indicated that Dindoshi in North Mumbai received the highest rainfall at 120 mm between 4 am and 10 am on Saturday, followed by Mulund (119 mm), Bhandup (111 mm), Magathane (109 mm), and Malad (103.4 mm).
Early in the day, the Andheri subway was shut down due to waterlogging, but the BMC later pumped out the water and reopened the subway.
On Saturday morning, the total water stock in the seven lakes supplying Mumbai exceeded 40 percent of their total capacity, standing at 40.96 percent. This is slightly higher than last year’s level of 39.61 percent on the same day, though significantly lower than the 89 percent recorded in 2022.
